Library Access Information

Library staff are available during the Keller Library's regular business hours from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, except for holidays and other days when the Seminary designates that staff will not be on duty. During other times, student workers are on staff to provide circulation assistance.

In order to gain access the library, patrons must have one of the following:
--a current GTS identification card
--a Library membership card
--a METRO referral card

Other members of the public may contact the Library Director (x211), Reference Librarian (x323) or the Head of Circulation (x264) to inquire about access to the Keller Library.

Reading Privileges

Prospective students and visiting scholars are always welcome to visit the Keller Library. The Library is open to current students, faculty, and staff of The General Theological Seminary and their immediate families.

With proper identification, during regular business hours (Monday-Friday, 9 am - 6 pm), reading privileges are extended to:
--Alumni/ae of GTS;
--Current students and faculty of institutions with whom the Library has a reciprocal use agreement:
-Union Theological Seminary (New York City)
-Drew University
-Lutheran Theological Seminary (Philadelphia)
-Mercer School of Theology
-St. Vladimir's Seminary
-Hebrew Union College
-Jewish Theological Seminary (for faculty and cross-registered students)
-Doctoral students in the Columbia/Barnard Religion Department;
--Current faculty of an accredited seminary, college or university;
--Current students and faculty of institutions belonging to the New York Area Theological Library Association and the American Theological Library Association;
--Clergy;
--Representatives of official agencies of the Episcopal Church;
--Persons with METRO referral cards (same day only).

Scholars and others with serious research needs may contact the Reference Librarian to schedule an appointment for their research. This may require them to get Special Collections privileges according to the regulations of the Special Collections and Archives policy.

Distance Access to the Keller Library

The General Theological Seminary offers the opportunity to enroll in a program called Theological Research from a Distance (LIB1) for distance access to the Keller Library. This program includes access to the Library's databases, the ability to borrow books by mail, and reference assistance by telephone or email. Alumni

The Keller Library welcomes alumni to visit the library and use its collections for reading and research. For remote access to the ATLA Religion Database, alumni are encouraged to contact the reference librarian to sign up for the ATLAS for Alums program. For borrowing privileges, reference assistance and remote access to all library databases, alumni may enroll in LIB1, Theological Research from a Distance (see above for details).
The Keller Library is on the east side of the Close, on the site of the former Sherrill Hall.
