What a brisk and speedy winter break! The snow is falling steadily on the Close outside the reading room on this first day of class, and we are excited to have our patrons back here at the Keller Library. E-Books. It’s a glorious day when we can announce that the Keller Library will begin our e-books initiative this semester! Look for Father Kadel’s January 24 message in your in-box, and mark your calendar for either Tuesday, February 12 (1:30 – 2:15 pm) or Friday, February 22 (10:45 – 11:30 am). That’s when we’ll offer a workshop that tells you all about how to search for e-books in our catalog and then read them on your mobile device. Questions? Using other libraries. The Keller Library and the Burke Library at Union Theological Seminary have a reciprocal agreement where our students are able to borrow materials from the Burke, and their students may borrow materials from the Keller Library. Follow the links above for the particulars on how to do this! GTS students, please contact Mary Robison if you need to use materials that aren’t in the Keller Library. Exhibits at the Keller Library. We’re getting ready to pack up Revolution!, our exhibit from this past fall. Here’s a writeup on the exhibit (under “Art News”) in the Metropolitan Archivist, published by the Archivists Roundtable of Metropolitan New York. JSTOR announces FREE access (on a limited basis) to articles. Here’s an article from Library Journal that explains the program, and you can follow this link for the particulars from JSTOR. Your GTS library access code will give you off-campus access to some JSTOR collections (also to the ATLA Religion Database), and we can help you out with additional access onsite at the library. Archivists all over the metropolitan New York area have been coping with post-Sandy cleanup. We were fortunate at the Keller Library to have avoided damage from the storm, though it was a week of excitement on the Close. Others were not quite as lucky; read more about the herculean efforts of archivists in this article about one of our Chelsea neighbors.
Here’s the latest issue of Theological Librarianship for your edification, and finally, check out these words of wisdom from Deaconess Harriet Bedell, featured in Holy Women, Holy Men and whose feast day is January 8. It’s always good to keep these things in mind at the start of the semester:
- God is first.
- Don’t worry. Put all in the hands of God. Don’t think or talk about your troubles.
- Don’t hurry.
- Don’t eat too much, or between meals.
- Don’t do two things at the same time.
- All life involves sacrifice.
