Getting settled in the new library

We’ve been so busy unpacking that there’s been very little time to blog these past few weeks! Those of you who are local may know that the library staff is busily working away in the new offices, the workers are finishing up the last bits of construction…and our stuff’s coming back to us after four years in specialized library storage in Massachusetts!

Every weekday, Juan and his crew bring in a moving truck full of goodies and incorporate the books from storage into our existing collection. This week and last, they’ve been hauling large chunks of our periodicals holdings, and we are excited to see them! General Theological Seminary has extensive holdings in church history periodicals, especially those of the 19th century that relate to New York. While we chose to leave in storage a number of bound journals that are available electronically, we were certain to leave enough room for such treasures as the Christian Herald and Seaman’s Magazine (ca. 1817-1822) and the Southern Churchman (bulk late 19th c.).

We librarians miss our patrons! If you have questions or need research assistance during the time we’re closed to the public, please email one of us, and we may be able to help you…and keep an eye out for our grand opening date! We expect to be ready for you in August.
